Wheels

4X4 wheels, Geelong

The world of four-wheel driving is jam-packed with this part and that accessory, but when it comes to wheels there are really only two main choices to consider – steel rims or alloy rims.

Alloy rims have become popular in latter years, largely due to the increasing number of four-wheel drives owned by city dwellers who never venture off sealed roads and like their wheels to be nice and shiny.

But the appeal of alloy rims is not just their looks. Because they’re made from lightweight metal alloys, they actually weigh less and allow your vehicle to accelerate quicker than with steel rims. As well, alloy dissipates heat quicker than steel and alloy rims tend to be stronger than their steel counterparts. On the downside, however, alloy rims melt at lower temperatures and come with a heftier price tag. Because they’re not pliable they’re also hard to repair if damaged in remote locations, whereas a few good whacks with a hammer can often knock a steel rim back into shape.

Steel wheels, while heavy, are a popular choice with serious off-roaders heading into genuine rugged terrain, largely because of steel’s resistance to terminal damage, ability to be knocked back into shape and lower price overall.

At Geelong 4WD & Camping we have experience with both alloy and steel wheels, as well as most other 4X4 parts and accessories, and we’ll happily help you decide which after-market wheels best suit your requirements and our service team can fit them for you.
